“Untitled” and the Etudes

Untitled” and “Sacred Land” are among the first 20 études in the “Vietnamese Lacquer Curriculum Project” initiated by Bui Huu Hung following the success of the Vietnamese Lacquer Experimental Atelier in Marly-le-Roi, Paris, France in 2014. These artworks will be showcased in the nationwide Contemporary Art Exhibition & Auction organized by the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition – Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in collaboration with Truong Uy Auction House and CHON de l’art to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Three central symbols: a fragment of antique from the Nguyen Dynasty, a bowl, and a golden thread, together narrate the story of origin.

Origin, like an antique adorned with a precious layer of patina. With a gentle touch, the dust rises, and we hear history breathe for a fleeting moment. Origin exists intimately yet mysteriously. The black lacquer conveys this eloquently.

With his deep reverence and contemplations for Vietnam, Bui Huu Hung expresses complexity, fragmentation, and voids that invite reflection.
